Vivarium

Vivarium covers an area of 600 sq.m. To work with different types of animals some space allocated. The structure includes a vivarium space for washing and disinfection of equipment and inventory, premises for keeping animals, premises for the storage of feed, bedding and other supplies, facilities for handling the animals.

Vivarium staff is highly qualified, trained on the course “Zootechnical characterization lab animal” and having the experience of working with animals for at least 2 years.

Features of the application of various types of laboratory animals

Different studies used different types of laboratory animals. In the study of drugs used:

  • lab rats;
  • hamsters;
  • laboratory mice;
  • laboratory rabbits;
  • laboratory guinea pigs;
  • mini-pigs;
  • ferrets.

All these laboratory animals suitable for this purpose because they are of small size, cheap and easy in maintenance, are sensitive to drugs quickly and easily reproduced. In addition, they are easy to reproduce various models of human disease.

Animal studies

Laboratory guinea pigs useful in the study of allergic properties of drugs due to their natural sensitivity to allergens. The advantage of laboratory mice to their small size, simplicity to the conditions of detention, the very high rate of reproduction, as well as similarities with the human gene set of almost 99%. Laboratory rats are used in almost all pre-clinical studies.

Laboratory albino rabbits conveniently used in tests for irritation of the eyes, dark-colored rabbits in studies on models of ophthalmic diseases. Dwarf pigs also have a high genetic and physiological similarity to human metabolic ratio of 1.1, which is of obvious advantage in animal studies.

Hamsters are widely used in studies of carcinogenesis, reproductive toxicity, cardiovascular diseases. The metabolism of carbohydrates and lipids in hamsters similar to human metabolism, to a greater extent than in rats and mice.

Ferrets are used in biomedical research to evaluate the effect of various drugs on heart, brain and digestive system. Because estrus cycle is similar to the human cycle, this type of laboratory animals is interesting to carry out studies on the effect on the reproductive system, assessment of hormonal drugs.

In general, each type of laboratory animals takes its place in the study of new drugs, and is used for specific purposes. Today, it is preferable to carry out experiments on animals from the clean lines that makes the results more reliable experiments.

In our animal facility, in addition to contract research and execution of public contracts, the work on development of new models of human diseases in animals, conducted their standardization, some publications on this topic can be viewed below.
